“Authenticity is the new currency.”

Authenticity Design:

Authenticity Design is the practice of uncovering what is genuinely true about a person, brand, organization, or creative work, then using that understanding to guide how it shows up in the world.

The work begins by understanding the human being or organization behind what is being created. What do they believe? What matters to them? What makes them different? What are they trying to accomplish? What feels unmistakably like them?

Those answers become the reference point for the creative decisions that follow.

Authenticity Design can be applied wherever something true needs to be translated into something others can see, read, hear, experience, or connect with.

Definition

Authenticity Design connects who you are with how you show up.

The practice begins with identity and uses that understanding to guide creative expression. Strategy and creativity inform one another, giving decisions a reason beyond what looks good, what competitors are doing, or what happens to be trending.

Knowing yourself well enough that the market does not define you creates work that is recognizable because there is something real underneath it.

SCOPE OF PRACTICE

Authenticity Design can inform branding, marketing, books, websites, environments, experiences, and other forms of creative expression. Whatever the medium, the underlying question remains:

Does what people are experiencing on the outside match what is true on the inside?

People are remarkably good at sensing when the answer is no, even when they cannot explain what feels off.

CORE PRINCIPLES

KNOW WHO YOU ARE BEFORE DECIDING HOW TO SHOW UP

A clear identity gives creative work somewhere to come from. Without it, decisions are easily driven by trends, competitors, personal taste, or whatever looked good in someone else's Instagram feed that morning.

CONSISTENCY BUILDS TRUST

Consistency means people encounter the same underlying truth wherever they meet you. That familiarity helps them understand what you stand for and, over time, gives them a reason to trust it.

ALIGNMENT OVER COMPETITION

Competitors can tell you a lot about the landscape, but they cannot tell you who to be within it. Authenticity Design looks for the connection between what is genuinely yours and what matters to the people you hope to reach. When those things align, differentiation becomes far less about trying to stand apart and much more about being recognizable for what you naturally bring.

THE HUMAN IS THE DIFFERENTIATOR

AI gives us extraordinary creative capabilities, but access to the same tools can quickly lead to sameness. Authenticity Design keeps the human behind the work visible, using technology to amplify what makes us distinct rather than smooth it away. The better the tools become, the more valuable our humanity becomes.

WHY NOW?

AI has fundamentally changed our relationship with creative work. Polished execution is becoming easier and faster to produce. We can generate words, images, concepts, campaigns, and entire brand worlds in a fraction of the time they once required. The opportunity is enormous. So is the potential for a sea of sameness.

For creative professionals, this changes where our value lies. Designers can explore language with AI. Writers can develop visual concepts. The boundaries between traditional disciplines are already shifting, making professional judgment and the ability to recognize what feels true increasingly important.

The same is true for brands. People sense when the message and the reality do not match, or when something feels suspiciously like everything else in their feed. AI can help us make almost anything. Knowing what is worth making, what belongs to us, and why another human should care is still our job.

A NAME FOR WORK THAT ALREADY EXISTS

The ingredients of Authenticity Design are not new. Designers have their ways of getting beneath the surface of a brand. Writers know how to find a voice. Strategists have methods for uncovering what makes something relevant and distinct. Other creative disciplines have developed their own approaches to finding the truth that should guide the work.

Authenticity Design gives those shared instincts a common name.

The term was coined by Angela DiMarco in 2026 to describe a principle she recognized across her own work and the work of other experienced creatives: what we create becomes more meaningful when the outward expression is rooted in something true.

A common vernacular gives people working across disciplines a way to recognize that principle in one another's work and explore it together.

No single creative discipline owns authenticity. Authenticity Design shouldn't either. Naming it allows us to find one another, practice it, challenge it, and evolve it.

FOUNDER ATTRIBUTION

Angela DiMarco coined the term Authenticity Design in 2026, giving a name to a way of working she had practiced throughout her career in branding and creative direction.

With more than 30 years of experience spanning advertising, brand strategy, design, and publishing, her work has consistently focused on understanding the human behind what is being created and allowing that truth to guide the creative process.

Today, she continues to explore and develop the practice through her client work, writing, and conversations with fellow creatives.
